Systemic & Rare
This category covers conditions that are less common but critically important to recognize, some of which can become medical emergencies if ignored. These injuries often present differently from typical overuse conditions and require professional attention.
Exertional Rhabdomyolysis
A potentially life-threatening breakdown of skeletal muscle following extreme exertion, releasing toxic proteins into the bloodstream and causing severe muscle pain, weakness, and dark urine.
Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome (PAES)
Cramping, pain, or numbness in the calf during running that eases with rest, caused by abnormal compression of the main artery behind the knee by surrounding muscle and tendon structures.
Nerve Entrapment Syndromes
Burning or sharp pain along a specific nerve pathway in the leg or foot, caused by a peripheral nerve being compressed, stretched, or irritated at a specific anatomical point.
Tibiofibular Joint Sprain
Pain, instability, or clicking at either the outer knee or just above the ankle caused by injury to the joint connecting the tibia and fibula.
Exercise-Induced Anaphylaxis
A rare but potentially life-threatening allergic reaction triggered specifically by exercise, causing symptoms ranging from hives and itching to airway compromise and circulatory collapse.
